The caption below the photo says: This image appeared in the Italian newspaper “Repubblica” in September 2006 showing a hospital midwife at work in the Mitundu Community Hospital, near Lilongwe, the Capital of Malawi, Africa. Grazia then wrote a comment on it. “This image, the newborn being held by his feet by a nurse-midwife, definitely not European, makes one think about how we are still exporting the worst models of our “first” world, those that, in the name of health, alienate parents from their children and make them slaves to medical practice. Or perhaps, this is still the way things are being done here in Europe, though we see ourselves as masters of culture and a highly refined civilization? In actuality, if we listen to the worrying data that Michel Odent presents in his latest book, just released by the Turin-based publisher Il Leone Verde, we have done even worse.”
